Today, almost every product has its own packaging. Packaging is an important part of a product’s image, based on which a buyer may or may not decide to make a purchase. At Jamnik, we are proud of the work we do, as our products are of high quality, and above all, beautiful, often helping to tip the scales in favour of purchasing a particular product. Packaging production is our passion, and beautiful gift packaging, cardboard packaging for bottles, and other products are our pride. Almost every household in Slovenia has a product at home that was once protected and adorned by our cardboard packaging.

You may not realize it, but packaging is almost as important as the product hidden inside

The purpose of packaging has always been primarily to protect the product from the negative effects of transport and storage. In some cases, it allows products to be stacked more easily during transport, which enables more of them to be transported at once. The production of cardboard packaging is a process that has undergone many changes from the beginning to the present day.

But custom cardboard packaging and other packaging is much more than just product protection. A buyer’s first contact with a product usually happens precisely through the packaging. Research shows that we decide on a product within seven seconds of seeing it for the first time. That is precisely why it is of utmost importance that the packaging is prepared with the same care as the product itself. Research has even shown that for the buyer, packaging is almost as important as the brand of the product they are buying. What is more, for companies that invest some time and money in packaging development, the number of customers has increased significantly, by almost 30 percent. That is precisely why companies whose bread and butter is the production of cardboard packaging (or packaging production in general) are of exceptional importance.

Through its appearance, packaging can subconsciously communicate many things about the product to the buyer, which do not necessarily need to be explicitly stated on the packaging. Its colour can communicate whether the product inside is intended for women, men, or children. Pink, red, and purple shades naturally appeal to women, while blue and grey appeal to men. Packaging for children’s products is usually in more vibrant colours and is also more colourful. Shades of green and other natural colours communicate that the product is environmentally friendly. Modern, minimalist graphics communicate that the product and the company that produces it are in step with the times. And so on.

Packaging has a long tradition

The original purpose of packaging was, as is still the case today and as mentioned above, the protection of goods and easier transport from one location to another. It was especially important in hunter-gatherer groups that lived a nomadic life, which meant that they did not stay in any one place for long. People at that time wrapped goods in leaves, animal skins, and even stored them in hollowed-out and dried pumpkins.

Cardboard packaging or its distant ancestors originate from China. Packaging production then took place somewhat differently than today. Historical sources suggest that in the 1st or 2nd century AD, the Chinese wrapped food in processed bark. Over the centuries, they thoroughly perfected the technique of producing this type of packaging and used it for an increasing number of products. Today, cardboard packaging is very different from those first packages made of processed bark, and its role has also changed somewhat or even expanded. Ever since the very beginning of selling products in packaging, sellers have been aware of the major role it plays in the buyer’s decision-making process, which is why they have always strived to make it as attractive as possible.

Perhaps you did not know how very old an invention cardboard is. It was patented as early as the 19th century, but invented several centuries earlier – in China, of course. Approximately two decades after the patent, the first patented cardboard box followed. In the first half of the 19th century, they also began mass-producing paper bags.

Why is cardboard packaging still so popular today? The advantage of cardboard packaging is that it is lightweight and foldable, yet still protects the product well; furthermore, certain types of cardboard packaging are more environmentally friendly than, for example, plastic and composite packaging, as they are easier to recycle.

Gift packaging increases the value of a gift

Just as packaging represents the buyer’s first contact with a product on the shelf and is proven to strongly influence the decision to purchase (or not), a gift recipient is also much more delighted with a gift if it is packed in neat packaging. Gift packaging makes a gift more meaningful and gives the recipient the impression that their loved one thought carefully about which gift to choose before purchasing. For example, you are not just giving a shower gel, body lotion, and a washing sponge, but a home spa set, which has a much greater meaning for the recipient. You are not just giving a bottle of wine and two glasses, but a pampering set for two. You are not just giving a perfume and aftershave gel, but a set for the real man in your life. This type of gift packaging or its contents sell particularly well during the Christmas and New Year holidays, as well as around Valentine’s Day and other holidays characterized by gift-giving, as many people give one of the mentioned sets to their loved ones.

Gift packaging also includes cardboard packaging for bottles. This, too, is of course partly intended to protect the bottle, but to an even greater extent, it elevates the gift to the next level. It is available in various shapes and thus satisfies different customer needs. Cardboard packaging for bottles is usually available in a natural, light brown colour, which emphasizes that the contents of the bottle are made from the highest quality and only natural ingredients. Of course, it can also be produced in other colours.
